Erectile dysfunction

Sildenafil or Tadalafil: Which Active Ingredient Is Right for You?

Sildenafil and tadalafil are the two most commonly used active ingredients for erection problems. The main difference is duration: sildenafil provides 4–6 hours of reliable effect, while tadalafil can remain active for up to 36 hours¹. For occasional use at predictable times, sildenafil is a good fit - it works quickly and then wears off again⁴. For regular sexual activity or unpredictable moments, tadalafil can be more convenient². Both are equally effective and safe - the choice depends purely on your situation and what feels most comfortable to you.

What is the difference between sildenafil and tadalafil?

Both active ingredients belong to the same category: PDE5 inhibitors. They work in a similar way by blocking an enzyme that restricts blood flow to the penis. This makes it easier to get and maintain an erection during sexual arousal.

Sildenafil was first to market, in 1998 under the brand name Viagra. It triggered a revolution in treatment for men with erection problems. Tadalafil followed five years later, in 2003, as Cialis. Both are now also available as generics.

The fundamental difference lies in their molecular structure. This determines how long the substance stays in your body and how long you notice its effects. Sildenafil has a relatively short half-life, while tadalafil has a much longer one. This has practical consequences for how you use them.

Another difference: tadalafil has a unique feature that also makes it suitable for daily use in low doses. Sildenafil is almost always used on demand - you take it when you need it.

Which works faster?

Here, sildenafil has an advantage. Most users notice it starting to work within 30 to 60 minutes. Some feel effects as early as 20 minutes, especially if taken on an empty stomach.

Tadalafil requires a bit more patience. It usually takes 30 minutes to 2 hours to feel the full effect. Peak blood concentration is reached only after about 2 hours. This means you typically need a bit more lead time.

In practical terms: with sildenafil, you can take a tablet relatively shortly before intimacy. With tadalafil, it’s better to plan a bit further ahead. The benefit of that extra lead time is that tadalafil then covers a much longer window.

Which lasts longer?

This is the key distinction. Sildenafil remains active in the body for about 4 to 6 hours. For most situations, this window is more than sufficient. In contracts, Tadalafil can remain effective for up to 36 hours² - about six times as long.

What does this mean in practice? With sildenafil, you have a few hours where the medication helps, after which the effect gradually fades. This is ideal for a planned evening or night. Once the effect has worn off, any side effects usually disappear as well.

With tadalafil, you get a much wider time window. A tablet on Friday evening can cover the entire weekend - hence the nickname “weekend pill.” You don’t need to plan the exact moment - if it falls within that 36-hour window, it can work.

The downside: side effects such as headache or nasal congestion can also last longer with tadalafil. If you’re sensitive to side effects, you may prefer sildenafil’s shorter duration.

Are the side effects different?

Side effects are largely similar because both substances work in the same way⁶,⁷. The most commonly reported complaints are headache, flushing, nasal congestion, indigestion, and dizziness. These are usually mild and resolve on their own.

There are subtle differences in frequency. With sildenafil, facial symptoms - flushing and a warm sensation - occur slightly more often. Users of tadalafil report back pain or muscle aches relatively more frequently. These differences are not large, but for some men they can be decisive.

In rare cases, sildenafil can cause a temporary bluish tint to vision. This is due to interaction with enzymes in the eye. Tadalafil does not have this specific effect.

Duration also matters. Because tadalafil stays active much longer, any side effects may last longer as well. For men who find that bothersome, sildenafil’s shorter duration can be an advantage.

Which one is more effective?

This is a common question - and the answer is that they are equally effective. Research directly comparing sildenafil and tadalafil shows no significant difference in effectiveness¹. Both help most men overcome erection problems.

Effectiveness depends more on how well a medication fits your situation. Sildenafil may feel more effective if you value fast onset and predictability within a shorter window. Tadalafil may feel more effective if you want flexibility and spontaneity.

Both only work with sexual arousal - they do not cause an automatic erection. This is important: effectiveness also depends on the context and your mental state. Stress or fatigue can affect how well both medications work.

Some men respond slightly better to one than the other. This is individual and cannot be predicted in advance. The only way to know is to try.

What should you choose for occasional use?

Occasional use means you don’t have sex every week - maybe a few times per month. In that scenario, both options can work, but they suit different preferences.

Sildenafil fits well if you know in advance when you’ll be intimate. It works quickly, does its job, and then wears off again⁴. You use it only when needed.

Benefits of sildenafil for occasional use:

  • Take it relatively shortly beforehand (30–60 minutes)

  • Effect is predictable and time-limited

  • Side effects, if any, usually resolve within a few hours

  • Cheaper if you use it infrequently

Tadalafil offers a different advantage for occasional use: you don’t need to know exactly when intimacy will happen. Take it, for example, on Saturday morning and you have flexibility for the entire weekend. That’s convenient if you don’t want to plan.

What should you choose for regular use?

Regular use means being sexually active multiple times per week. In that situation, the differences become more important.

Sildenafil can still work perfectly well with regular use - you take it each time before sex. However, this does require planning and timing every time. Some men don’t mind that routine; others find it annoying.

Tadalafil offers two options for regular use. The first is the same on-demand approach as sildenafil: 10 mg or 20 mg when needed. Because it lasts so long, two tablets per week often provide sufficient coverage. The second option is unique to tadalafil: a daily low dose of 5 mg³.

This daily option builds a steady level of the active ingredient in your body. After a few days, you’re continuously ready without needing to plan. For men who have sex regularly and find planning stressful, this can be a very practical solution.

Benefits of daily tadalafil:

  • Always ready - no planning required

  • Can significantly reduce performance pressure

  • Often milder side effects due to the lower daily dose

  • Feels more “natural” - less of a “medication moment”

The downside is that you take it every day, even on days without sex. And it requires patience - optimal effect is usually reached only after 4–5 days.

The right choice for your situation

Sildenafil and tadalafil are both excellent active ingredients for erection problems. They work in a similar way and are equally effective and safe. The differences are mainly duration and convenience.

Sildenafil may fit men who:

  • Can plan sex or have fixed moments

  • Want fast onset with a shorter duration

  • Prefer occasional use

  • Prefer predictability

Tadalafil may fit men who:

  • Value spontaneity and flexibility

  • Are sexually active regularly

  • Don’t want to plan or stress about timing

  • Are considering daily low-dose use

Studies confirm that both active ingredients work equally well⁵. The choice therefore depends on what fits your life. Feel free to try both - what works for one person isn’t automatically the best choice for another.

At Menkind, after an online consultation with a registered doctor, you can choose between sildenafil and tadalafil, either as brand-name products (Viagra, Cialis) or as generics. All common dosages are available: 50 mg and 100 mg sildenafil; 10 mg and 20 mg tadalafil for on-demand use; and 5 mg tadalafil for daily use.
